What is a Lemon Diet?
Drinking lemon water in the morning may stimulate the metabolism and detoxify the body. For this reason, many people who want to lose weight and live healthier, drink a large glass of water with lemon first thing in the morning.
But can lemon water really help you lose weight? And what should you pay attention to?
In this article, I want to show you my self-invented, classic 7-day lemon juice and weight loss diet and report on my own experience with it. You will also find many other information and tips on the subject here. So, let’s dive in…
In total, there are three variants of the diet. The simplest method is to eat normal and balanced and drink the lemon juice throughout the day.
The juice of the sour fruit has a stimulating effect on digestion; thus, your body can utilize the food better.
In the second variant of the lemon juice and weight loss program, a flexible nutrition plan is provided. In this, there are so-called “theme days”.
The third lemon diet is a crash diet. Only diluted lemon juice with added spices may be drunk.
Let me give you my personal example of a diet plan with lemons.
For the lemon diet, you need the juice of 4 lemons per day.
The nutritional plan for my self-created lemon diet looks like this:
Immediately after getting up, you drink the juice of a lemon that has been diluted with plenty of water. This stimulates digestion and detoxifies the body.
During the day, you may only eat lean meat or fish. As a side dish steamed vegetables are recommended. To satisfy the hunger in the evening, a grapefruit or an orange with blueberries or raspberries is allowed.
Sport is on your program for the first day. You should engage at least for 45 minutes in an exercise you really do enjoy.
So that the cell metabolism gets a boost, fruits and vegetables are on the menu for this day. Of these, you may eat any amount. It should be noted that neither dairy nor carbohydrates may be added to today’s plan.
Days 3, 4 and 5
These three days are all about blood sugar stabilization, and here the lemon helps. The sugar is distributed evenly throughout the blood, and that prevents food cravings.
On these days, you’re going to eat protein-rich food: Legumes, lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts, low-fat milk, yogurt or mushrooms are perfect for this.
The food should be cooked with lemon juice. Instead of vinegar, a dressing of lemon juice is prepared for the salad. Your fruit salad can also be refined well with the juice of a lemon, and shrimp in lemon juice always tastes delicious.
Days 6 and 7
The body needs fat, which covers about 25% of its energy needs. The fats ensure that the carbohydrates do not pass into the blood too quickly.
It is particularly important to use only high-quality fats. Extra virgin olive oil, but also rape, coconut, and avocado oil are perfect to cook with or to add more taste to a salad. It is also allowed to eat fatty fish, which contain valuable Omega 3 fatty acids.
As a snack, for in between, nuts or seeds are suitable. Fats in dairy products, such as butter, or fatty meat should be consumed only in small quantities; better yet not at all.
The last two days of the lemon diet you will be feasting on carbohydrates. The foods, such as noodles or bread, should be made from whole grains only. Please, do avoid hidden additives, along with sugar and preservatives. Artificial additives would inhibit the fat-burning process and put a strain on your liver!
Does Lemon Water Act Alkaline?
A currently popular diet is the so-called alkaline diet. Here, mainly foods are allowed, which are supposed to act alkaline and, thus, protect the body against acidification.
Since lemon water and juice contain acid, the metabolism in our body indeed causes an increase in alkaline metabolites.
Also, an alkaline effect on the pH of human urine has already been demonstrated.
There is, however, a Misunderstanding regarding Alkaline Nutrition!
The nutritionists often claim that the pH of the blood is altered by the alkaline foods. However, the pH of human blood can hardly be influenced by the diet.
And that’s just as perfect the way it is! Because if the pH of the blood changes only a few percents, you would immediately end up in the hospital. This condition is called metabolic alkalosis or acidosis and can even be life-threatening.
As a result, you have just learned that it does not matter if lemon water is alkaline or acidic since the alkaline diet is based on a myth. Much more important is that you diversify your diet with healthy foods and receive enough vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and fiber.
Are there any Lemon Diet Experiences Other than My Own?
Many people who have already done the diet speak of good success. I, personally, experienced the introduction to the lemon diet as easy. Due to the appetite-inhibiting properties of lemons, the feeling of cravings stayed away. Other lemon dieters reported that they felt fit on the first day; I, too, felt more energetic.
The general well-being was increased, and most people were getting more energetic and active during the diet than they were before.
Recommended is one of the first two variants so that your body is not burdened too much. Even those who are not overweight and eat well can incorporate a lemon day once in a while to detoxify the body.
Conclusion: Does the Lemon Diet Work?
For me, the lemon diet always has a positive effect on the cravings and since these are reduced, the appetite is restrained as well (I say “always,” as I’ve already done it thrice mostly during summer time).
Another advantage is the production of collagen, which has a skin tightening and tissue strengthening effect. The metabolism gets going; promoting fat burning.
By losing weight, the body gets into a stressful situation, thus the lemon diet will cover the increased vitamin C requirement.
The citric acid can attack the teeth, therefore, you should rinse your mouth with water after drinking the juice. It can also lead to increased urination.
If you decide on the lemon variety of the first variant, the risk that the yo-yo effect occurs is low. The third diet should only be done when it comes to the point where you quickly want to lose a few pounds.
The lemon diet and weight loss plan actually work. It depends, however, on the variant and on the initial weight how many pounds you will drop in a week. I usually get rid of between 4 to 5 pounds.
Before starting with the lemon diet, although it’s said to be safe, it is recommended to contact your attending physician. You should do this before beginning any diet, just to be protected.
Your doctor may know reasons that speak against the implementation of the diet.
