Green tea – what is it actually?

Have you wondered why green tea keeps its color so well? Immediately after the harvest, the farmers treat the leaves with heat and dry them. This inactivates the enzyme phenoloxidase, which would otherwise cause the leaves to turn brown.

There is an overwhelming number of studies that prove the health effects of green tea.

Green tea is an essential nutritional component of the inhabitants of the island of Okinawa in Japan, who often live to be more than 100 years old.
In traditional Chinese medicine, green tea has been of great importance to health for centuries. Naturopaths use it to treat many diseases and symptoms (inflammation, metabolic syndrome, cancer prevention).
The special active ingredients in green tea belong to the group of flavan-3-ols. These plant substances make many teas so incredibly healthy because they are full of antioxidants. Due to the manufacturing process, green tea contains a lot of these ingredients. Make sure that the preparation is gentle to preserve them.
The main ingredients are:
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
Epicatechin (EC) and

Green tea is also rich in the amino acid L-theanine, which together with other amino acids makes up to six percent of the dry matter.
Other ingredients are vitamin A, vitamin B, calcium, potassium, phosphates, magnesium, copper, zinc and fluoride. However, these substances are almost negligible because they are absorbed in small amounts due to the dose.
Green tea varieties
The different types of green tea result from different cultivation areas and harvesting methods. Some varieties grow on the bushes a little longer, such as Matcha.
The most popular and well-known variety is Sencha.

Green tea preparation
The preparation of green tea is really very simple.
Put your high-quality, organic green tea in a teabag or strainer (about 1 tsp per cup).
Heat water to around 176 degrees Fahrenheit, as is common with the traditional Chinese variant.
Now let the tea steep for about one to three minutes. You can leave larger and thicker leaves for three minutes. Green tea tastes best with a dash of fresh lemon and honey.
Green tea infusion time
The brewing time for green tea lies between 1 and 3 minutes. There is actually some discussion about which brewing time is optimal. However, most studies show that valuable plant substances extract after this time. The taste is then also pleasantly mild.
