CBD For autoimmune diseases – Diverse mode of action
CBD acts on numerous systems in the human body, which is why CBD for autoimmune diseases is highly beneficial. Furthermore, a Brazilian-English team of scientists found out in 2014 that CBD acts on the 5-HT1A receptor for serotonin.
This explains the beneficial effects of CBD on anxiety, depression, sleep, nausea and vomiting, among other things.
CBD also interacts with ion channels, including TRPV1, which we also know as vanilloid receptors. In this way, CBD also relieves inflammation and pain.
CBD for autoimmune diseases variations
Numerous studies have now documented the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD. Back in 2003, researchers at the University of Tampa, Florida, found that cannabinoids balance the immune system.
Five years later, scientists at the University of Michigan showed that CBD affects the T-helper cells. They play an important role in inflammation.
The beneficial effect of CBD on inflammation can in principle alleviate symptoms in all autoimmune diseases.
Whether Hashimoto thyroiditis, Crohn’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis: When the misguided immune system fights one’s own body, chronic inflammation is the result.
Supporting effects on MS
In addition, the positive effects of CBD in autoimmune diseases are far from being sufficiently researched. An animal experiment showed in 2018 that cannabidiols improve memory performance in type 1 diabetes.
In multiple sclerosis, CBD pain seems to be effective at alleviating. In patients with ulcerative colitis, cannabidiol reduces inflammation in the intestine.
The same study, however, showed that in animals CBD generally has a beneficial effect on intestinal inflammation.
Entourage Effect of Cannabis
Not to be forgotten is the so-called Entourage effect for commercially available CBD products. This includes the interaction of cannabidiols with secondary plant active ingredients such as terpenes.
Back in 2011, a study of British researchers found that the terpenes of cannabis synergy effects on inflammation, pain, anxiety and infections.
Scientists in Madrid (Spain) compared the effect of botanical preparation of cannabis plants on cell cultures with breast cancer with the effect of pure cannabinoids in a 2018 study.
The result of the study: The botanical preparation was much more effective.
How do I take CBD oil?
CBD oil unfolds its effect particularly well when you put drops of the oil under the tongue. Then leave the oil on for at least one minute.
This method has the advantage that the oral mucosa absorbs a part of the oil immediately. So it does not have to pass through the stomach to be used through the digestive tract.
However, the taste of CBD oil is not for everyone. If you don’t like the aroma of the oil, you can also take CBD oil in capsules.
In this case, however, it takes a little longer for you to feel the effect of CBD. There is no need to take cannabidiol with meals. Neither oil nor capsule straining the stomach.
How fast does CBD oil work?
If you keep the oil in your mouth, you can notice the first positive effects after just a few minutes. When recording from the stomach, you have to expect a time window of up to half an hour.
If you take the CBD after a meal, this time can also extend up to two hours. When you inhale CBD liquid, the cannabidiol unfolds its effect almost immediately.
Ointments with CBD for skin inflammation, on the other hand, take about an hour to work.
How long does the CBD effect last?
In general, it can be said that the effect of CBD lasts between four and eight hours. Various factors influence the duration of action.
In addition to the quality and type of preparation taken, the duration also depends on the dose. The nature of the symptom also plays an important role. For example, CBD often works only one to two hours in severe pain.
Target times of the duration of action
Smoking: about 4 hours.
CBD oil: 6 to 8 hours
Ointments: up to 6 hours.
Dosage of CBD
There are no precise instructions yet for the dosage of CBD in commercially available preparations such as oil and liquid. Every person reacts a little differently to the active ingredients.
The level of dosage also depends on the severity of the symptoms to be treated. In their book, “A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis-Healing without the High”, Leonard Leinow and Juliana Birnbaum recommend a gradual increase in dosage.
The two authors have decades of experience in dealing with cannabinoids. For example, Leonard Leinow founded the nonprofit cannabis collective Synergy Wellness in California.
Important: Before taking CBD supplements, you should definitely talk to your doctor.
Entry with a small dosage
The so-called microdose of 0.5 to 20 milligrams of CBD per day is, therefore, suitable for entry. For mild symptoms such as stress, nausea, sleep disturbances and headaches, this dose may already be sufficient.
A drop of CBD oil at 5 percent, taken three times a day, provides you with about 15 milligrams. If you tolerate this dose well, you can increase the amount taken – if your discomfort requires it.
The standard dosage for autoimmune diseases
For chronic inflammation of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, pain, depression, fibromyalgia and Lyme disease, the experts suggest a dosage of between 10 and 100 milligrams a day.
Three drops of CBD oil with 15 or 20 percent active ingredient content contain a dose in this range. Also with the standard dosage: Start with little, watch, and increase the amount slowly if necessary.
In cancer, liver disease, epilepsy and diseases that threaten life, dosages up to 800 mg daily are sometimes recommended and used in studies.
For this high dosage, pastes with CBD are particularly suitable, otherwise, you would have to take a lot of drops of CBD oil. A milliliter paste of 30 percent contains 300 milligrams, the 40 percent paste equivalent to 400 milligrams and a paste with 50 percent contains 500 milligrams.
Possible Side Effects of CBD
In 2017, two scientists from the German Nova Institute in Hürth published an evaluation (24) of the clinical data and animal experiments available to date. They confirmed that CBD is relatively safe and has no life-threatening side effects. In addition to fatigue and changes in appetite and body weight, diarrhea is one of the undesirable effects.
Compared to other drugs for serious diseases, such as immunosuppressants or cortisone, the side effects of CBD are far less severe. However, scientists point out that the general effect of CBD has not yet been sufficiently researched. These studies usually have a small number of participants. In addition, the mode of action of CBD on the hormonal balance needs to be further investigated.
What is CBD beneficial for?
When you review the various portals on the Internet, CBD seems like a new panacea. In part, the praises can be traced and scientifically proven, for example in the treatment of psoriasis or sleep disorders. Even with allergic respiratory diseases and asthma, the healing effect seems to be relatively well researched.
However, whether CBD can help with polycystic ovarian syndrome, for example, seems questionable. It is clear that cannabidiol affects hormonal balance and relieves stress and depression. Whether the healing effects for cysts on the ovaries can be derived from this may be accompanied by question marks.
Nevertheless, CBD is a natural remedy with relatively harmless side effects. Do you want to gain your own experience with CBD? You could choose a far more dangerous pastime – but as a precaution, only after a conversation with your doctor.
What is your opinion and experience with Cannabidiol? Would you like to add something, or ask a question? We look forward to your comment!
